Course description

This course serves as an introduction to fundamental finance concepts and is designed specifically for students enrolled in the Blockchain Minor. Students will explore the intersection of finance and blockchain technologies, understanding how traditional financial principles apply and are transformed in the context of blockchain and digital currencies. The course will provide a solid foundation in financial theory, including the time value of money, risk and return, portfolio management, and delve into the specifics of how blockchain technology is impacting financial markets, digital assets, and emerging financial technologies.

Course goal(s)

This course aims to introduce students to fundamental finance principles and the transformative potential of blockchain technology. Students will explore the basics of financial markets, analyze financial statements, and understand the role of cryptocurrencies and digital assets. The course covers the impact of blockchain on financial systems, smart contracts, decentralized finance (DeFi), and the regulatory environment. Through case studies and real-world applications, students will evaluate blockchain projects, discuss ethical implications, and stay updated on future trends and innovations, preparing them for the evolving landscape of finance and blockchain technology.

  • Understand Financial Fundamentals: grasp the essential concepts and principles of finance, including the time value of money, risk and return, and financial statement analysis, to build a solid foundation in traditional finance.
  • Comprehend Blockchain Technology: gain a thorough understanding of blockchain technology, its architecture, and key components, and learn how it differs from and impacts traditional financial systems.
  • Explore Cryptocurrencies and Digital Assets: study the development, types, and functioning of cryptocurrencies, particularly Bitcoin and Ethereum, including the processes of mining, trading, and managing digital wallets.
  • Analyze Blockchain's Impact on Financial Markets: investigate the applications and implications of blockchain technology in various financial sectors, such as payments, lending, and insurance, and understand its potential to transform financial markets.
  • Develop Investment and Risk Management Skills: learn about investment strategies for digital assets, the concept and functionality of smart contracts, decentralized finance (DeFi), and develop the ability to assess and manage risks specific to blockchain-based investments.
