Course description

This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of cinematography and digital editing, from technical basics to advanced preproduction, production and postproduction techniques.

Course goal(s)

Through a combination of theoretical lectures and practical assignments, students will develop the skills to create visually compelling narratives and effectively edit digital media. The course aims to foster an appreciation for the art and craft of cinematography and editing, preparing students for careers in film, television, and digital media production.

  • Apply basic visual perception concepts like space, depth, and composition to improve storytelling.
  • Use storyboards effectively to plan and visualize scenes before shooting.
  • Control exposure, focus, and framing to achieve the desired look.
  • Understand how light and shadow affect the visual story.
  • Use digital editing software to piece together and refine footage.
  • Sync sound, apply transitions, and use effects to improve the flow of the story.
  • Capture and edit sound to support the visual elements of a film.
  • Adjust and improve color to match the intended look of the film.
  • Understand the history and key developments in cinematography and digital editing.
  • Analyze different cinematography and editing styles to get ideas for your own work.
  • Communicate creative ideas and technical needs clearly and effectively.
